Snake Butte is located 10 miles south of Harlem on the northern part of Ft. Belknap Reservation, with the Little Rockies to the east and the Bear's Paw Mountains to the west. Snake Butte is a sacred place for the Native Americans , used for vision quests and sweat lodge purification.
Rocks from the stone columns were used as material to build Ft. Peck Dam, near Glasgow, MT in the 1930s.
